IRVING, Texas - A man was arrested in Irving, Tuesday afternoon, on a driving while intoxicated charge after police said his erratic driving led to a crash on eastbound SH-183.
According to the Irving Police Department, officers were dispatched at about 1:10 p.m. Jan. 20th to the 3100 block of East SH-183 to investigate a reported traffic accident. Callers reported a black Chevrolet Avalanche swerving off the roadway before crashing into a white vehicle.
When officers arrived, they made contact with 50-year-old Marin Gonzalez-Martinez, who was standing next to his 2008 black Chevrolet Avalanche. Gonzalez-Martinez told officers he was driving home from work. A witness at the scene told police the driver had been operating the vehicle erratically before the crash.
While speaking with Gonzalez-Martinez, an officer observed red, glassy eyes and detected the odor of alcohol on his breath. Police said Gonzalez-Martinez appeared confused about why he was being detained. Standard field sobriety tests were administered in Spanish with the assistance of a bilingual officer, and officers determined he was intoxicated and unfit to operate a motor vehicle.
Gonzalez-Martinez was arrested for driving while intoxicated and transported to Baylor Medical Center – Irving, where a blood sample was drawn. Officers reported finding multiple empty and partially full open alcohol cans inside the vehicle.
He was initially booked into the Irving Jail on a charge of DWI with an open alcoholic container and causing an accident. During processing, authorities determined Gonzalez-Martinez was undocumented and in the country illegally. INS Dallas requested an immigration hold without bond.
Gonzalez-Martinez was transferred to the Dallas County Jail, where he remains in custody.
