EVERMAN, Texas — A student was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon, March 11th, after a handgun was discovered on the campus of Everman Joe C. Bean High School, prompting a lockdown and a large law enforcement response.
Shortly after 2:00 p.m., a student approached an Everman Police Department School Resource Officer and reported that another student on campus might be in possession of a firearm. School officials immediately placed the campus on lockdown while emergency safety procedures were activated.
Everman police officers, working alongside campus and district administrators, quickly identified and located the suspected student. The student, a juvenile, was taken into custody without incident and officers recovered a handgun.
Authorities said the suspect is an Everman High School student. Because the individual is a juvenile, no identifying information has been released. Officials said appropriate criminal charges will be pursued.
Police also addressed rumors circulating on social media suggesting the firearm had been displayed during or after a fight on campus. Authorities said that information is false and there is no evidence the weapon was shown or used during any altercation.
Officials said a fight did occur on campus, but investigators determined it was unrelated to the firearm incident.
Everman police credited the student who reported the concern and the quick response by the school resource officer and campus administrators for allowing the situation to be resolved safely.
The Everman Police Department said it will continue working with Everman ISD to maintain a safe learning environment and encouraged students and community members to report suspicious or concerning behavior to school staff or law enforcement.
