The Cardinal Legacy: Inside MacArthur High School

IRVING, Texas - Located in North Irving, MacArthur High School has served as a cornerstone of the Irving Independent School District (IISD) for over six decades. Established in the mid-1960s and named after General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, the school has grown from a fledgling community campus into a sprawling, culturally diverse institution that reflects the shifting demographics and dynamic energy of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

Represented by their iconic red, black, and white colors and the fierce Cardinal mascot, MacArthur High School balances a rich historical legacy with forward-looking Career and Technical Education (CTE) initiatives.

A Rich Local History

MacArthur High School officially opened its doors in the fall of 1964 under its first principal, Arthur Casey. Initially welcoming a smaller student body spread across split grade levels, the school grew rapidly. By the 1966–1967 school year, it celebrated its very first graduating class.

The late 1960s marked a pivotal moment for MacArthur as the campus successfully integrated, welcoming students from the historic J.O. Davis High School. In the decades that followed, the school continued to adapt, establishing its highly regarded Army Junior ROTC program during the 1973–1974 school year—a program that remains a major fixture on campus today.

Campus Demographics and Culture

Today, MacArthur High School is home to approximately 2,600 students in grades 9 through 12. It stands as a vibrant example of the multicultural fabric of North Texas, featuring a minority enrollment of roughly 93%, with a proud and vibrant majority-Hispanic student body.

While the school faces the unique hurdles common to large, urban public schools—including navigating funding support for economically disadvantaged households—community pride runs deep. Local organizations, churches, and volunteer groups frequently partner with the school to host neighborhood events, sponsor sports teams, and ensure students have the personal resources they need to thrive.

Academics and Hands-On Career Pathways

While state standardized testing data highlights areas where educators are actively working to bridge achievement gaps in math and reading, MacArthur shines brightly in its specialized, real-world educational pathways.

Rather than relying solely on traditional lectures, MacArthur features a robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program that allows students to gain college credits, certifications, and industry experience before graduation. The curriculum organizes unique, student-run operations that are open to the Irving public:

  • The School of Architecture, Construction, and Civil Engineering (ACE): Hands-on training in architecture, engineering, construction, and welding.

  • The Bistro Catering & Hospitality: A comprehensive culinary arts program where students actively manage a commercial catering service.

  • The Cardinal Claw: A fully student-managed school store where teenagers learn entrepreneurship, administrative management, sales, and retail marketing in real-time.

  • Arts & Digital Communication: Specialized tracks focusing on graphic design, audio/visual production, and computer science.

Champions on the Court and the Gridiron

School spirit is anchored by the MacArthur Cardinals athletic programs, which have produced some historic moments in Texas high school sports.

The 2011 State Championship Masterclass

The 2010–2011 MacArthur girls' basketball team put together one of the most dominant and memorable runs in Texas high school hoops history. Finishing the season with an incredible 37-2 record, they captured the UIL Class 5A State Championship by defeating Georgetown 49-43 in the final.

The team was a powerhouse fueled by future professional talent. It featured elite guards like Odyssey Sims (who went on to become an All-American at Baylor and a WNBA champion) and Alexis Jones (who won national titles at UConn and Baylor before heading to the WNBA).

Guiding them was the legendary Coach Suzie Oelschlegel, who spent over three decades building MacArthur into a state powerhouse. Winning the 2011 title earned her national Coach of the Year recognition and cemented that squad as one of the best public school teams Texas has ever seen.

Best Finish in Football: The 1985 Playoff Run

While MacArthur has had several highly rated teams over the decades, including an elite 10-1 regular season finish in 2004, their deepest run in the Texas high school football state playoffs happened in 1985.

In the 1985–1986 season, the Cardinals advanced all the way to the Class 5A State Quarterfinals (the regional final round).

During that historic postseason stretch, they won a dramatic Regional round game against Midland Lee (24-21) to punch their ticket to the final eight teams in the state. Their historic playoff run finally came to an end in the Quarterfinals when they were defeated 27-7 by an absolute juggernaut: the legendary Odessa Permian "Friday Night Lights" Panthers, who went on to finish as state runners-up that year.

To date, that 1985 squad holds the crown for pushing the Cardinals the furthest down the Texas high school football playoff bracket.

A Launchpad for Notable Alumni

Over the decades, MacArthur has graduated a long list of students who found major success in professional sports, Hollywood, and public service.

  • Brian Bosworth ("The Boz"): Perhaps the most famous personality to come out of the school, Bosworth was a high school All-American linebacker for MacArthur (Class of '83). He went on to become a larger-than-life, two-time Butkus Award winner at the University of Oklahoma and played in the NFL for the Seattle Seahawks before transitioning to acting.

  • Kerry Wood: A dominant Major League Baseball pitcher who spent the majority of his career with the Chicago Cubs. He famously struck out 20 batters in a single game in 1998 and was a two-time MLB All-Star.

  • Odyssey Sims & Alexis Jones: As mentioned above, both were elite WNBA draft picks and pillars of the 2011 championship basketball team.

  • Peter MacNicol: An Emmy Award-winning actor known for his roles in Ally McBeal, Ghostbusters II, Sophie's Choice, and 24.

  • Don Davis: A MacArthur graduate who went on to serve as a U.S. Congressman representing North Carolina.

  • Akin Ayodele & Ron Brooks: Both had successful careers in the NFL as defensive standouts after playing their high school ball for the Cardinals.
