The Home of the Vikings: Inside Nimitz High School

IRVING, Texas - If you head down to south Irving, you’ll find the blue and silver home of the Nimitz High School Vikings. Opened in 1968, Nimitz was built to handle Irving’s rapid population boom in the late 1960s. The school honors Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the Texan who commanded the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II. True to that naval heritage, a massive ship anchor proudly sits in front of the campus entrance, serving as a reminder of the school's identity.

Today, Nimitz anchors the southern end of the Irving Independent School District, welcoming a diverse student body of over 2,700 students who keep the neighborhood's energetic spirit alive.

Big Ideas: The Academy of Biomedical Science

Nimitz holds a unique spot in North Texas education thanks to its specialized Academy of Biomedical Science. This isn’t your average high school science department. The program gives students a direct head start on medical careers through hands-on tracks in biomedical engineering, medical diagnostics, and forensic science.

The school features professional-grade lab spaces where students analyze DNA, study human body systems, and work through real medical case studies. For students looking to go into healthcare, it bridges the gap between basic high school classes and college-level medical programs.

Gridiron Glories and Deep Playoff Runs

Nimitz has built a reputation over the years for producing incredibly tough, physical athletic teams. When it comes to sports, football is a major part of the school's history.

The Peak of Viking Football: 1989 & 1993

While Nimitz has fielded plenty of playoff-bound teams, their absolute best finishes on the gridiron happened during the golden eras of 1989 and 1993.

In both of those historic seasons, the Vikings battled their way deep into the postseason, reaching the Class 5A Regional Final/Quarterfinals (the final eight teams in Texas). The 1989 squad, led by a fierce defense, captured the district crown before making their deep playoff charge. In 1993, they repeated the feat, putting together a dominant run that solidified Nimitz as a true Texas football powerhouse of the late 20th century.

A Launchpad for Championship Athletes

When you look at the trophy cases and wall of fame at Nimitz, you see the names of athletes who didn't just make it to the next level, they won at the highest levels of sports.

  • Michael Huff: A true legend on campus. After a stellar career as a Viking, Huff went to the University of Texas, where he won a National Championship in the legendary 2005 Rose Bowl and took home the Jim Thorpe Award as the best defensive back in college football. He was selected 7th overall in the NFL Draft and played seven seasons in the league, mostly with the Oakland Raiders.

  • Matt Vanderbeek: A versatile defensive standout who graduated from Nimitz and went on to play linebacker and defensive end in the NFL for the eagles, Colts, and Cowboys. He reached the absolute pinnacle of football by winning Super Bowl XXVIII with the Dallas Cowboys.

  • Ronnie Bradford: Another elite defensive back out of South Irving. Bradford played college ball at Colorado before spending a decade in the NFL. He famously played in Super Bowl XXXIII with the Atlanta Falcons and later transitioned into a successful college and NFL coaching career.
