GARLAND, Texas - The Garland Police Department arrested a Rowlett man Wednesday evening following a standoff at a motel along Interstate 30.
Police said officers received information shortly after 4 p.m. May 27 that a suspect wanted in connection with an attempted bank robbery was staying at a motel in the 200 block of West Interstate 30.
Investigators identified the suspect as 56-year-old Billy Jean Stewart of Rowlett.
Authorities said Stewart was wanted in connection with an attempted bank robbery that occurred in Dallas the previous day and was considered armed and dangerous.
Responding officers confirmed Stewart was inside a motel room at the location.
According to police, repeated attempts to contact Stewart were unsuccessful, prompting activation of the department’s SWAT team due to the elevated risk.
Over several hours, officers and SWAT negotiators continued efforts to secure Stewart’s voluntary surrender.
When those attempts failed, SWAT officers entered the room and safely took Stewart into custody without incident or injuries, police said.
Stewart is currently being held at the Garland Detention Center on a robbery attempt warrant issued through Dallas County as well as a motion to revoke related to a manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance case involving more than 200 grams. Authorities said both warrants carry no bond.
