Grand Prairie Man Arrested in March Fatal Arlington Convenience Store Shooting

Aleq Holmes (suspect) and Malachi Hayes (victim)

ARLINGTON, Texas - A Grand Prairie man has been arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with a fatal shooting at an Arlington 7-Eleven that occurred earlier this year.

The Arlington Police Department announced that 20-year-old Aleq Damar Holmes was taken into custody on June 4, 2026, following a homicide investigation into the death of 20-year-old Malachi D. Hayes.

Hayes was a 2024 graduate of Arlington Sam Houston High School where he played varsity basketball.

Members of the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force located Holmes in Grand Prairie and arrested him without incident.

The investigation began on March 26, 2026, when Arlington police officers responded to a shooting at approximately 1:24 a.m. at the 7-Eleven convenience store in the 2100 block of East Abram Street.

When officers arrived, they found Hayes lying unresponsive in the parking lot suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Hayes was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

According to investigators, homicide detectives reviewed digital evidence and interviewed witnesses during the course of the investigation. The evidence led detectives to identify Holmes as a suspect in the shooting.

Police believe Hayes and Holmes may have been involved in high-risk activity related to a firearm transaction when the shooting occurred.

Based on the findings of the investigation, detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging Holmes with one count of Capital Murder.

Following his arrest, Holmes declined to speak with investigators.  On June 5th, he was transferred from the Arlington Jail to the Tarrant County Detention Center.

The Arlington Police Department said the investigation remains active and ongoing. Detectives noted that additional arrests are possible as the case continues to develop
