LEWISVILLE, Texas — The Lewisville Police Department says its Drone First Responder program played a key role in quickly locating a tractor-trailer responsible for a major oil spill on Interstate 35E.
According to police, reports of a large oil spill on the northbound lanes of Interstate 35E prompted an immediate response from officers.
Lewisville Police Sergeant O'Hare, one of the department's certified drone operators, launched a drone to assist responding officers.
Using the aerial view, Sgt. O'Hare quickly located the suspected tractor-trailer responsible for the spill and provided officers with real-time updates and a detailed description of the vehicle.
The information allowed officers to safely stop the truck and move it to a safer location, reducing the risk of additional traffic hazards.
Police said the incident highlights the value of the department's Drone First Responder (DFR) program, which provides officers with immediate aerial intelligence to improve response times and decision-making during critical incidents.
The department also recognized Lewisville Public Works and Pro Tow for their rapid response in cleaning up the oil spill and helping keep the interstate safe for motorists.
Officials said the coordinated effort minimized traffic disruptions and helped prevent additional crashes and vehicle damage.
