Two Denton Residents Arrested in Fatal Corinth Hit-and-Run That Killed 23-Year-Old Pedestrian

Stephenia Cooper and Gerald Nolan

CORINTH, Texas — Two Denton residents have been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a 23-year-old pedestrian on Interstate 35E last month.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:50 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, in the 4900 block of northbound Interstate 35E near Exit 461 (Corinth Parkway).

When Corinth Police officers and emergency personnel arrived, they discovered that a pedestrian had been struck and killed. The driver fled the scene without stopping to render aid.

The victim was later identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office as 23-year-old Matthew Jacob Ring of Denton. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the days following the crash, the Corinth Police Department appealed to the public for witnesses, dash camera footage, and surveillance video that could help identify the vehicle involved.

Two days later, investigators released a surveillance image of a vehicle of interest seen leaving the area around the time of the crash, although the image was not clear.

Police said the investigation continued using multiple investigative techniques, including FLOCK License Plate Reader technology.

On July 3, the department announced the arrests of 42-year-old Stephenia Dion Cooper and 45-year-old Gerald Antonio Nolan, both of Denton.

According to investigators, Cooper has been charged with:

  • Failure to Stop and Render Aid – Collision Involving Serious Bodily Injury or Death
  • Tampering/Fabricating Physical Evidence

Authorities believe Cooper was the driver involved in the fatal crash. Her bond was set at $110,000, and she remains in custody at the Denton County Jail.

Nolan has been charged with:

  • Tampering/Fabricating Physical Evidence

His bond was set at $25,000. Jail records show he posted bond and was released on July 4.

The Corinth Police Department said the investigation remains active and that additional information may be released as it becomes available.
