Johnson County Sheriff's Office Investigating Inmate Death at County Jail

CLEBURNE, Texas - The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive inside the Johnson County Jail.

According to the sheriff's office, detention staff discovered the inmate unresponsive in a single-occupancy cell on July 15.

Jail personnel immediately began life-saving measures and requested emergency medical assistance. Despite those efforts, the inmate was pronounced dead.

The sheriff's office said it has notified the appropriate state agencies in accordance with Texas law and established procedures.

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards and the Texas Rangers will conduct independent investigations into the incident. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office has also launched an internal administrative review to examine the circumstances surrounding the death.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office identified the deceased as 33-year-old Steven Charles Lenard of Alvarado, TX.   The cause of the death has not been released yet. 

The sheriff's office said it remains committed to transparency and accountability but noted that information released during the active investigation may be limited to protect the integrity of the investigative process.
