ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police have arrested a second suspect in the March shooting death of a 20-year-old man who investigators say was lured to a meeting under the guise of selling or trading a handgun before being robbed and fatally shot.
Following additional investigation, Arlington Police Department homicide detectives obtained a capital murder warrant for 20-year-old Dion McGriff-Brown.
McGriff-Brown was arrested without incident on July 23 by members of the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force in Dallas. He was transported to the Tarrant County Jail, where he remains in custody.
The arrest comes one month after 20-year-old Aleq Holmes was arrested and charged with capital murder in the same case.
The investigation began on March 26, when officers responded to a shooting in the parking lot of a convenience store along East Abram Street.
Police said 20-year-old Malachi Hayes had been shot multiple times. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Surveillance video captured the shooting and showed Hayes approaching a parked vehicle and presenting an item to the driver. According to detectives, the driver attempted to grab the item, leading to a physical struggle.
Investigators said gunfire erupted moments later. Hayes was seen attempting to flee before collapsing, while additional shots were fired from inside the vehicle. The vehicle then fled the scene.
Detectives later obtained cellphone records showing Hayes had arranged through a social media application to sell or trade a handgun with an individual later identified as Holmes. The two agreed to meet at the convenience store to complete the transaction.
Based on witness statements, cellphone records and other evidence, investigators believe McGriff-Brown accompanied Holmes to the meeting and that the pair intended to rob Hayes.
Police said cellphone data placed McGriff-Brown both at the scene of the shooting and at the location where detectives later recovered the suspect vehicle.
Holmes and McGriff-Brown are both being held in the Tarrant County Jail on capital murder charges. McGriff-Brown's bond has been set at $500,000.
The investigation remains ongoing.
