Hispanic Man Shot at By Irving Police Actually Died from Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

Irving Police is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred around 10 a.m. this morning in the 800 block of Elwood Rd near Pioneer Rd and Nursery Rd.

Officers responded to an unknown call where a woman reported she had been shot by her husband.   After the incident, the suspect fled on foot before police arrived at the home.   During the search of the area, the suspect was located in the backyard of a neighboring property.  Officers entered the backyard and after announcing themselves, the suspect and officers both discharged their weapons.   The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and the victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  None of the officers involved were injured.

Update July 6

The suspect has been identified as 59 year-old Rogelio Castro.   The preliminary investigation indicates that Castro died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and not by shots fired from Irving Police.   The victim in this case, Castro's wife, has been released from the hospital.
