A recent fire in Irving was determined to be caused by unattended cooking.
The Irving Fire Department (IFD) has issued some safety tips to prevent fire in your kitchen.
- ALWAYS stay in the kitchen while cooking - keep an eye on what you fry.
- Keep things that can burn away from the stovetop at all times.
- NEVER use water to put out a grease fire. Use the lid or metal baking sheet to smother the fire, or a Class K extinguisher.
- Keep kids and pets out of a 3-foot zone around the stove.
- Turn pot and pan handles away from the edge of the stove so they aren’t pulled down or knocked over. Accidents only take a second!
The IFD has a website dedicated to safety and offercs education to keep your family save from fires. The site offers the following facts:
"Fire is deadly, hot, dark, and fast! Keep your family safe during a house fire by being prepared. Make a fire escape plan for your home and practice it with every member of your family."
"Fire danger doesn’t sleep – about half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11pm and 7am. You may only have 2 minutes (or even less time!) to safely escape a home fire once your smoke alarm sounds."
