Denton Police Department officers and detectives are actively investigating a shooting incident that occurred on Thursday evening in the 2600 block of W. University. At approximately 8:10 p.m. on July 13, officers responded to a distress call reporting a shooting in the parking lot of Winco Foods. Tragically, upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered the lifeless body of an adult male who had sustained at least one gunshot wound.
According to initial reports, it became apparent that the shooter had fled the area prior to the arrival of law enforcement, and there was no immediate ongoing threat to the public. As the investigation unfolded, detectives uncovered crucial information revealing a connection between the male shooter and the deceased male victim.
Authorities have now identified the suspect as Kendrick Freeney, a 23-year-old individual who has been taken into custody and is currently being held at the City of Denton Jail on charges of Murder.
