On the morning of August 15, 2023, emergency personnel from Mineral Wells Police and Mineral Wells Fire/EMS responded to a distress call at Lamar Elementary School in the 2000 block of SE 12th Street. The incident involved a 5-year-old child who had been struck by a vehicle.
Upon arrival at the scene at approximately 7:37 am, both officers and EMS personnel immediately administered aid to the injured child. The Mineral Wells Police Department initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, while EMS continued to provide medical attention to the young victim.
Preliminary findings from the investigation reveal that a Public Transit Services Bus had been in the process of dropping off the child at Lamar Elementary School as part of the school commute. Tragically, as the child was disembarking from the bus, the vehicle unexpectedly rolled forward and collided with the young pedestrian.
Following the incident, the injured child was transported via air ambulance to Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth. The child remained alert and conscious at the time of transport.
Local authorities are collaborating closely with the Mineral Wells Independent School District (ISD) and the Public Transit System as they work to unravel the details of the incident. At this juncture, it remains uncertain whether any criminal charges will be filed in connection with the accident.
