On September 6, 2023, law enforcement officers from Hopkins County Sheriff's Office and Cumby Police Department were engaged in a high-speed pursuit that led to the arrest of Charles L Battles, 39, of Allen, Texas.

The pursuit began as authorities were responding to a welfare concern for a potentially suicidal individual, identified as Charles Battles. A Cumby Police officer observed Battles riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle at a high rate of speed on the I-30 North frontage road near the FM 499 overpass.

In response, the officer activated emergency lights and sirens, initiating a pursuit. After a brief chase, officers managed to catch up to Battles on I-30 Westbound, near the 110-mile marker. However, instead of stopping, Battles chose to evade law enforcement intentionally and knowingly.

The pursuit continued until Battles eventually took the 101 exit of I-30 Westbound, where he came to a stop. At this point, officers were able to take him into custody without further incident.

Charles Battles was subsequently booked into the Hopkins County Jail on the charge of evading arrest. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the initial welfare concern for Battles.
