Police Respond to Fatal Confrontation Following Suicidal Threats in McKinney

On September 11, 2023, at approximately 8:16 PM, officers from the McKinney Police Department were called to the 700 block of Bumpass Street in response to reports of a man making suicidal threats and engaging in self-harming behavior with a knife in a parking lot.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers attempted to establish contact with the individual, later identified as Sidney Dotson, a 37-year-old Black male born in 1986. Despite multiple commands to drop the weapon and efforts to de-escalate the situation, Dotson continued to make suicidal threats and advanced towards the officers with the knife, ignoring commands to halt his approach.

Officers fired their weapons, striking the subject. Following the use of force, the officers initiated life-saving measures until the arrival of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Dotson was subsequently transported to a nearby local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Texas Rangers will be conducting the investigation at the request of the McKinney Police Department.
