North Richland Hills Police Department Addresses Misinformation on Staffing Levels

In response to recent misinformation circulating on social media, the North Richland Hills Police Department (NRHPD) has clarified its current staffing situation and recruitment efforts.

Over the past 90 days, the department noted that one officer has left, but five new officers have completed field training and are set to begin active duty. Additionally, three officers are currently in the academy, with three more slated to start in January. The department expressed gratitude for its dedicated staff, emphasizing their commitment to creating a safe and secure community.

As of the latest figures, NRHPD currently has 108 out of 121 police officer positions filled. The recent increase in vacancies, primarily in patrol staffing, is attributed to the approval of four newly created police officer positions secured through the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant. The department emphasized its commitment to responsible funding to align staffing levels with projected service demands.

Addressing a national trend, the department highlighted challenges faced by police agencies across the country in recruiting personnel. According to a 2022 national survey by the Center for State and Local Government Excellence, 78% of agencies reported difficulties in filling vacancies.

To enhance recruitment efforts, NRHPD has implemented various incentives, including a temporary waiver of the college requirement, hiring bonuses, lateral pay, a user-friendly recruiting website, and a partnership with the NRH Centre to assist applicants in meeting the required physical fitness level for the police test. The department continues to explore additional partnerships to address staffing shortages while maintaining a commitment to providing optimal service to the community.
