On September 25, 2024, the Frisco Fire Department responded to a large structure fire at Texas Pool Supply, located in the 10500 block of John W. Elliott Drive. The blaze was significant enough to prompt a shelter-in-place advisory for businesses within the area bordered by Research Road to the north, Page Street to the south, the railroad tracks to the east, and the Dallas North Tollway to the west. This advisory was issued shortly after the fire was reported and was lifted later in the day, although firefighters continued to monitor the situation.
Emergency dispatch received the first call about the fire at 7:44 a.m. By 9:28 a.m., the fire was declared extinguished, but not before it prompted a substantial response. The Frisco Fire Marshal confirmed that the fire involved chlorine and ‘pool shock’ chemicals, specifically trichlor and sodium, leading to immediate safety precautions for those in the vicinity.
Chief Kelly Kistner, Fire Marshal of the Frisco Fire Department, stated, “A company employee noticed a vapor. A fire and explosion followed. A nearby truck and the company’s building caught fire. But it’s important to note, damage to the interior is limited thanks to the building’s sprinkler system.”
A total of seventy-eight first responders, including personnel from the Frisco Fire, Police, and Public Works departments, were deployed to the scene. Ten individuals, comprising three firefighters and seven police officers, were treated at Medical City Plano after experiencing symptoms related to chemical exposure. All ten individuals were reported to be in stable condition, and they were transported to the hospital as a precaution.
Chief Lee Glover, Frisco Fire Chief, explained, “In a situation like today’s, we always implement decontamination procedures. This morning, we discovered some of our first responders developed symptoms they didn’t start the day with. So, we transported them to a hospital as a precautionary measure.”
Access to the industrial park east of John W. Elliott Drive remains closed until further notice, and residents are advised to avoid the area. The Little Elm Fire Department responded to assist, with mutual aid provided by The Colony, Plano, Prosper, and McKinney Fire Departments. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has been contacted and has sent a crew to evaluate the scene. The Environmental Protection Agency was also notified.
As of Thursday, September 26th, all Frisco firefighters and police officers involved in the response have been released from Medical City Plano following the incident. The cause of the fire at Texas Pool Supply remains under investigation, with officials looking into whether the storage of chemicals outside the building played a role in the fire.
