Robert Crolley, 43, of Plano, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon Causing Serious Bodily Injury, following a jury's guilty verdict. District Attorney Greg Willis announced the sentencing after the trial, which detailed a violent road rage incident that nearly claimed the life of an Uber driver.
On March 3, 2023, at approximately 12:50 a.m., Plano Police responded to multiple reports of gunfire near the intersection of Parker Road and Ranier Road. Among the 911 calls was a plea from the victim, an Uber driver, saying, “I’m dying! I’m dying!” Officers arrived to find the victim barely conscious in the driver's seat, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He had just dropped off a passenger moments before the attack, and the shooter had fled the scene.
First responders administered life-saving measures, and the victim was rushed to Medical City Plano. Although his vital signs were lost en route, trauma surgeons were able to revive him. The victim spent more than three months in the hospital and continues to require medical care.
Through eyewitness accounts and surveillance footage, Plano Police, led by Detective Justin Duffy, identified Crolley as the shooter. During the investigation, Crolley gave conflicting stories, ranging from not being involved to later claiming self-defense. However, no evidence supported his claim that the victim had brandished a firearm.
At trial, the jury rejected Crolley’s self-defense argument and found him guilty. The jury also learned of Crolley's prior convictions, including Grand Larceny and Simple Assault and Battery in South Carolina, leading to the 40-year sentence and a $4,000 fine.
District Attorney Willis commented after the sentencing, stating, “Road rage is a threat to every driver on our roads, and it has no place in Collin County. This victim didn’t know his attacker and did nothing wrong—he was just doing his job, when he nearly lost his life.”
Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Madison Young and Mollie Thompson prosecuted the case, with support from District Attorney Investigator Mike Bennett.
"We are grateful to the Collin County Criminal District Attorney's Office for their dedicated work on this case. The survivor experienced significant pain and turmoil following the incident, and we hope the sentencing aids in their healing process. We also thank our media partners for their compassionate coverage and acknowledge the efforts of our department employees in the pursuit of justice.", said the Plano Police Department in a statement.
