Dallas Man Sentenced to 50 Years for Double Murder

Kevin Sheffield

A 22-year-old man, Kevin Sheffield, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of Mohammed Kamara and Joseph Syas.

The first murder occurred on April 12, 2022, at approximately 5:30 AM when Kamara was shot once in the head in the parking lot of his apartment complex. He was found next to his vehicle with all his personal belongings intact by a passerby at 7:30 AM.

The second victim, Joseph Syas, was shot five times from behind while walking home from a QuickTrip on May 17, 2022, at around 1:42 AM. The shooting took place from a moving vehicle that drove north on Eastridge Drive before making a U-turn to approach Syas again. The defendant fired nine shots, striking Syas five times, and fled the scene in the same vehicle. Syas's body was discovered by a passerby at 4:51 AM, with all his belongings present.

While video footage from an apartment complex captured the suspect vehicle's movements, it did not record the shooting. The Dallas Police Department identified the vehicle as a 2008 to 2012 Chevrolet Malibu, noted for its distinctive headlight pattern. Through license plate readers, police traced the defendant to a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu that matched the description.

On May 26, 2022, Sheffield was arrested, and firearms ammunition was discovered in his vehicle. A subsequent search of his apartment yielded a 9mm pistol, which forensic analysis confirmed was linked to both murders.

Sheffield waived his right to appeal and accepted a guilty plea, resulting in a 50-year prison sentence on September 17, 2024.
