In a high-profile case that concluded on October 4, 2024, Alex Mungai, 30, was found guilty of Burglary of a Habitation with intent to commit a sexual offense. The Dallas County jury sentenced Mungai to 10 years in prison, probated for 10 years, along with a $10,000 fine.
The incident occurred on July 30, 2022, after the victim, a woman who had been out with friends at the Bottled Blonde bar in Dallas, encountered Mungai while trying to call an Uber. According to the testimony, Mungai, a stranger to the victim, approached her and insisted on calling her an Uber after she declined several times. Eventually, an Uber arrived, driven by a friend of Mungai's. Unbeknownst to the victim, Mungai was banned from Uber.
The victim testified that upon arriving home, Mungai followed her, despite her protests, and forced his way through a gate to enter the property. Captured on Ring camera footage, Mungai pursued her toward the back entrance of her home. Although the victim was initially able to lock him out, Mungai returned after she unlocked the door for a friend and sexually assaulted her.
Police arrived within minutes, responding to the victim’s friend's 911 call, and found Mungai attempting to flee the scene with his pants down. The Dallas Police Department led the investigation, and the case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Klarissa Diaz, with Tristin DerMargosian as the second chair. Abigail Cruz served as the DA investigator, and Adriana Sellers worked as the victim advocate.
Mungai’s 10-year sentence was suspended, allowing him to serve probation for the duration, but the court imposed a hefty fine and additional conditions.
