Oklahoma City Works to Increase Walkability

According to Walk Score, the walkability of a city is calculated by the number of errands residents can do each day simply by walking where they need to go. Oklahoma City’s downtown area had a walkability score was “72” in 2022. The whole of Oklahoma City is another story. Its walkability score was “34,” and this means that residents need a car to navigate through the town.

What Does “Walkability” Mean?

Walkability means that it is safe for residents to walk in the city comfortably, conveniently and enjoyably as the main way of getting around. A city is known as highly walkable if it has a public transportation system that the residents can rely on, multiple street signs that slow traffic down, sidewalks and bike lanes. Oklahoma City has been moving toward a higher degree of walkability in past years, and it does not plan to stop doing so.

MAPS 4 Sidewalks

MAPS 4 sidewalks place walkability and safety for pedestrians at the forefront of everybody’s minds. For this purpose, Oklahoma City designated $61 million for the construction of sidewalks across the city. Specifically, there will be more than 35 new sidewalks created this year. By the time we are in 2031, even more projects will have been completed.

The new sidewalks are going to make it easier for people to walk to school, medical centers and parks. They will also add amenities to beautify the area, such as public art, trees, landscaping, sustainable infrastructure and drainage. The sidewalks will also abide by ADA compliance standards, and pedestrian crossings are also going to receive updates.

The Community

Residents are aware of the importance of safety in their neighborhoods because they would like to be able to bike and walk in their community. Walkable neighborhoods can save residence time by avoiding long hours in traffic to get to work, errands and other outings. Walking can also save residence money by eliminating the need to own a car or by saving money on gas. Neighborhoods that are better connected may also foster a better sense of community. In order for residents to choose walking over driving, cities must provide safe routes. In 2021, there were 104 pedestrian deaths in Oklahoma, 24 of which took place in Oklahoma City.

From Now and Beyond in 2025

One area that needs work is where accessibility is concerned. People with disabilities use public transportation and the sidewalks on a regular basis, but some sidewalks and bus stops are not accessible and well-maintained at the moment. Another issue is that bus stops do not have the concrete platforms that the ADA requires to make them compliant. These bus stops also lack coverings according to Ms. Munoz.

MAPS 4 is going to improve these locations. Bus stops that currently have a high volume of ridership will be chosen to receive the concrete platforms and coverings that the ADA requires. The city will also upgrade these stops with branding that relates to the communities and the districts in which they are located. Ms. Munoz sees this as a positive because this branding could make these upgraded bus stops look more visually appealing to residents and make the residents feel welcome as well.
