Just before 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 5th, the Fort Worth Fire Department responded to multiple reports of an apartment fire in the 2800 block of Las Vegas Trail on the city's west side.

Fire crews arriving on scene encountered heavy fire engulfing both the first and second stories of an apartment building. A working fire was declared, and firefighters began battling the blaze amidst strong winds, heavy rain, and continuous lightning. As the storm intensified, the incident commander called for a second alarm to bring additional resources to the scene. Ultimately, firefighters adopted a defensive strategy to gain control of the fire.

During suppression efforts, a section of overhanging roof collapsed, falling onto one of the firefighters. He was quickly rescued from the debris by fellow crew members and transported to the hospital by MedStar. Fortunately, he has since been released and is reported to be in good spirits with minor injuries. One resident also sustained injuries but was treated at the scene by emergency personnel.

The fire damaged an estimated 6 to 8 apartment units, displacing approximately 14 residents from their homes. The American Red Cross Greater North Texas chapter was called to the scene to provide immediate emergency assistance to those affected.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, authorities have indicated that it does not appear to be related to the severe weather conditions.
