Irving Completes Major Upgrades at Hunter Ferrell Landfill, Extending Site Life by a Decade

Construction on several major improvements at the Hunter Ferrell Landfill, located at 110 E. Hunter Ferrell Road, has officially been completed, marking a significant investment in Irving’s long-term solid waste infrastructure.

The completed projects include a new Resident Convenience Center, expanded waste disposal cells, and a larger maintenance building. Together, the improvements are designed to make the landfill easier and safer to use for residents and staff while extending the landfill’s operational life by approximately 10 years.

New Resident Convenience Center

Irving residents will be able to begin using the new Resident Convenience Center in mid-January 2026. The center is now fully paved, allowing for all-weather access and smoother drop-offs. Its new location separates public traffic from staff operations, creating a safer and more efficient environment.

Residents may drop off limited items weighing less than 150 pounds at no cost. Identification and an Irving utility bill with a matching address are required.

Items accepted at no additional charge, provided they are uncontaminated, include:

  • Household trash under 150 pounds

  • Loose leaves and grass clippings

  • Clean brush

  • Recyclable materials

  • Dirt, brick, gravel, and similar materials

Updated Traffic Flow

To improve traffic movement within the landfill, Solid Waste Services has implemented a new traffic pattern. Residents will now enter through the western gate off Hunter Ferrell Road, which was previously closed, and exit eastbound through the scalehouse before reaching the convenience center.

Expanded Disposal Capacity

New waste disposal cells have been constructed in both the middle and west tracts of the landfill:

  • The middle tract cell spans 17 acres and reaches a depth of 85 feet, extending the landfill’s life by an estimated 8 to 10 years.

  • The west tract cell covers 1.5 acres at a depth of 23 feet, providing an additional 1 to 2 years of disposal capacity.

New Maintenance Building

To support larger equipment and future landfill expansion, the former maintenance building was demolished and replaced with a new, centrally located facility. The new building is approximately 4,900 square feet, about 36% larger than the previous structure, and is capable of housing the department’s 15-ton bridge crane.

Investing in Irving’s Future

The $6.8 million landfill improvement project was funded primarily through Solid Waste Capital Improvement Funds and Bond Funds. City officials say these upgrades reflect Irving’s ongoing commitment to maintaining reliable, high-quality services for residents now and for generations to come.
