GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — A 19-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter after police say he recklessly handled a firearm inside a vehicle, fatally shooting another occupant early Sunday morning.
According to the Grand Prairie Police Department, officers responded at approximately 2:50 a.m. on June 28 to the 500 block of MacArthur Boulevard after receiving reports of a shooting inside a vehicle parked in front of a residence.
Witnesses told investigators that 19-year-old Alexander Chavez was sitting in the back seat when he recklessly handled a firearm and unintentionally discharged it.
The bullet struck the victim, who was seated in the driver's seat of the vehicle.
After the shooting, Chavez fled the scene on foot but was apprehended a short time later by responding officers. Chavez is a resident at the home where the incident occurred.
Grand Prairie Fire Department paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office will release the victim's identity after next of kin have been notified.
Chavez has been charged with manslaughter, a second-degree felony.
The investigation remains ongoing.
