A horrific incident occurred at San Antonio International Airport (SAT) on Friday night when a ground crew member was tragically ingested into the engine of Delta Flight 1111, which had just arrived from Los Angeles. The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the incident.
At approximately 10:25 p.m. on June 23, 2023, police officers and firefighters were dispatched to the airport to assess the situation and provide immediate assistance.
The San Antonio International Airport issued a statement expressing their deep sadness over the incident. "An accident occurred on the ground at San Antonio International Airport (SAT) tonight that resulted in the fatality of an airline ground crew member. We are deeply saddened by this incident and are working with authorities as they begin their investigation. We will share more information as details become available."
The worker involved in the accident was an employee of Unifi Aviation, a company contracted by Delta Airlines to handle ground operations. Unifi Aviation, in a statement released on Saturday afternoon, expressed their profound grief over the loss of their employee.
"Unifi Aviation is deeply saddened by the loss of our employee at San Antonio International Airport during a tragic incident in the late hours of Friday, June 23, 2023. Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased, and we remain focused on supporting our employees on the ground and ensuring they are being taken care of during this time."
The company further stated that their initial investigation indicated that the incident was unrelated to Unifi Aviation's operational processes, safety procedures, and policies. Out of respect for the deceased, they declined to provide additional information, emphasizing their cooperation with the ongoing investigation led by the police and other officials.
