The Mansfield Police Department provided an update on an accident that occurred on August 2, 2023, involving one of their officers on the 3500 block of S. US 287 (southbound). The officer was responding to an assist motorist call when a vehicle struck the patrol unit and then collided with another vehicle. Fortunately, the officer was outside of his vehicle at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported.
The incident unfolded as the police officer was attending to a motorist in need of assistance on the busy Southbound US 287 highway. Suddenly, a vehicle failed to yield to the flashing emergency lights and slammed into the parked patrol unit. The impact caused a secondary collision with another nearby vehicle.
Thankfully, the quick thinking and vigilance of the officer, who had exited his vehicle to approach the motorist in need, averted what could have been a tragic outcome. Despite the damages sustained to the patrol car and the involved vehicles, all parties emerged from the accident unscathed.
In response to the incident, Mansfield Police Chief Tracy Aaron posted a vital reminder to the public. She said, "We would like to remind everyone to please be aware of your surroundings and to move over a lane or, when it is not possible to move, slow your vehicle to 20 mph below the posted speed limit when you are approaching an emergency vehicle."
Chief Aaron's message emphasizes the importance of practicing caution and adhering to traffic laws when emergency vehicles are present on the road. Motorists are urged to give ample space and reduce their speed to ensure the safety of both law enforcement officers and fellow travelers.
