A substantial fire broke out at the Sherwin Williams Plant located at 701 S. Shiloh Road on August 7, 2023, at approximately 1:20 am. The Garland Fire Department responded promptly, arriving at the scene to find a fierce blaze engulfing the structure and giving rise to a series of powerful explosions.
Immediate action was taken to evacuate the plant and ensure the safety of all employees. Despite the intensity of the fire, only one minor injury was reported among the employees, who was treated on-site.
The scale of the fire necessitated a robust response, with a total of 16 Garland Fire units converging on the scene. After nearly two hours of relentless efforts, the fire was successfully suppressed.
Throughout the course of the firefighting operation, a strong chemical odor permeated the surrounding area, raising concerns about potential hazards. In response, a specialized hazardous materials team was dispatched to conduct preliminary air quality assessments both at the site and in nearby neighborhoods.
Preliminary test results yielded reassuring news, indicating that a widespread evacuation of the vicinity was not deemed necessary. However, as a precautionary measure, comprehensive air quality and stormwater runoff testing is ongoing.
In order to ensure the safety and well-being of the community, additional support was sought from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA conducted aerial assessments, flying over the area to monitor air quality from a broader perspective. Encouragingly, all monitoring efforts, both local and aerial, consistently indicated no imminent need for evacuation.
The origin of the fire is currently under investigation, as authorities work diligently to uncover the circumstances that led to this incident. As a safety precaution, the public is advised to refrain from entering the immediate vicinity of the plant until the investigation is concluded.
