At approximately 6:06 pm today, emergency services from Justin Police and Fire/EMS were dispatched to E. 5th Street near FM 156 in response to a major accident involving an Amtrak train and a vehicle.
The incident unfolded when an Amtrak train, carrying 54 passengers and crew members, collided with a vehicle at the train crossing on E. 5th Street. The collision resulted in the fatality of the vehicle's sole occupant, identified as the driver.
No injuries were reported among the 54 passengers and crew members on board the Amtrak train.
The circumstances leading to the collision are currently under investigation by Justin police. Preliminary information from an eyewitness suggests that the driver attempted to cross the tracks with the railroad crossing arms down. However, the police investigation will provide official confirmation regarding the details surrounding the crash.
At this time, alcohol is not suspected to have played a role in the collision.
The identity of the deceased driver has not been released pending notification of family members.
