Grand Prairie ISD Superintendent on Paid Leave After Board Determines Policy Violations

Dr. Jorge L. Arredondo

The Grand Prairie Independent School District (GPISD) Board of Trustees announced on September 4, 2024, that Superintendent Jorge L. Arredondo has been placed on paid administrative leave effective immediately. The decision was made during a special board meeting to protect both the District and Dr. Arredondo. He had recently been named the lone finalist for the position on May 28 and officially started on July 8, 2024.

Prior to joining GPISD, Arredondo served as the officer of student affairs at Spring ISD and was a former superintendent at the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo (PSJA) Independent School District. The Board did not disclose specific details regarding the investigation or the allegations against Arredondo.

In the interim, Deputy Superintendent of Business Operations, Tracy Ray, has been appointed as Acting Superintendent to ensure the smooth operation of the district. Some trustees described the situation as a "witch hunt," while residents expressed concerns about a lack of transparency and the decision-making process occurring behind closed doors.

“Because this is an ongoing investigation, there will be no additional comment from this Board,” said Board President Amber Moffitt. “We believe all parties will be treated fairly with a high level of professionalism by the outside third-party law firm that is conducting the investigation.”

On October 3, 2024, GPISD trustees convened for three hours behind closed doors to discuss the findings of the investigation. Following public comments, the board voted 4-2 on a motion stating that Arredondo violated the district’s discrimination, harassment, and retaliation policy.

Despite the motion, the Board declined to reveal the specifics of the allegations, leaving some community members frustrated. Board members assured the community that a report would be shared, although no timeline was provided. It remains unclear what the vote means for Arredondo's job status.
