Fort Worth ISD Responds to Immigration Concerns After Substitute Teacher's ICE-Related Post

Fort Worth ISD has initiated an investigation after a substitute teacher allegedly posted on social media, urging U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to visit North Side High School. The post, shared on the platform X, read: "Yall should come to Fort Worth, TX to Northside High School. I have many students who don't even speak English and they are in 10th-11th grade. They have to communicate through their iPhone translator to me."

The district has not released the teacher’s name but confirmed the individual is a substitute. "We are aware of a recent social media post referencing North Side High School which was allegedly made by a substitute teacher and has caused concern among our Fort Worth ISD community," the district stated. "We take this matter very seriously and are conducting a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances and ensure appropriate actions are taken." The substitute teacher has been removed from campus during the investigation, per district protocol.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Karen C. Molinar addressed the situation in a letter to families, reiterating Fort Worth ISD’s commitment to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all students, regardless of their immigration status. She also provided answers to frequently asked questions raised by concerned families:

  1. Does the district ask students or families about immigration status?
No, Fort Worth ISD does not request or seek information on the immigration status of students or their families. We enroll students without discrimination, regardless of their immigration status, in alignment with current legal requirements.

  2. How is student information safeguarded?
We maintain the confidentiality of all student records in compliance with federal law, specifically the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Access to these records is restricted to individuals with legal authorization.

  3. If I am a parent or guardian, and I am worried about being detained while my child is at school, what should I do?
In the event that any parents are detained during school hours, the district will ensure the safety of students until an authorized adult can pick up the child, while complying with state and federal child welfare laws. We kindly ask that all our families take this opportunity to update emergency contact information for your students at their school.

  4. What should my student do if they have concerns about coming to school?
If your student has concerns about coming to school, please reach out to their campus principal or school counselor. Fort Worth ISD offers resources to support students who may need additional assistance.

Dr. Molinar concluded, "The safety and well-being of our students is and always will be our top priority. Thank you for entrusting Fort Worth ISD with your child's education."
